Backpedaling

Sat Oct 09, 2010 16:27 (UTC -5)

Rather than sweeping this under the rug, I am going to say it here.

I thought I was taught that pinched nerves caused disease, but I wasn’t. I was taught that pinched nerves affect the immune system’s ability to prevent disease. Those are two different ideas. I’m not sure how I came up with the first one. It must have gotten twisted around in my mind.

I have a strong immune system. I have been exposed to some common diseases and not caught them despite not having been vaccinated for them.

I love my parents. As long as I’m dependent upon them, I will do as they say, including when it comes to my health. This is a decision I came to myself. I think it’s fair.

Sheesh man, it’s your body.

Those are two different ideas

Yep. And they’re both wrong.

I have been exposed to some common diseases and not caught them despite not having been vaccinated for them.

To be fair, though, this logic is sound. I’ve never ended up in a coma from a bicycle accident. Therefore, I don’t need to wear a helmet.

As long as I’m dependent upon them, I will do as they say, including when it comes to my health

Yes. And there are two logical conclusions to that process. First, you become financially independent. Second, you die of a an easily preventable disease. You won’t get much of a chance to regret the second. Although they might.

(@Claire is right. Treat questions about your medical choices exactly the same as you would questions about elective amputations. Except? An elective amputation is less likely to kill you than this is.)

jesus, people, give him a damn break. i, for one, think it is tactful how jordon approached this. let me clear the air: our parents read this blog – i’m jordon’s sister – and our parents aren’t idiots. sure, they may have different ideas than you, but they would never intentionally harm us by neglecting our need for medical care.

Thank you, Kristen, for defending your brother and us. Just because someone has a different idea than you about something doesn’t make you right and them wrong. This country gives us free choice. We are exercising this right of free choice. Jordon (and Kristen, for that matter) can do whatever he wants to now that he is an adult. You should respect his and our opinions, thank you very much!

I for one would rather play safe and spend that little time and money to get vaccinated. If it happens that I did not get the shot and got infected, there is no one else to blame but myself.
