Oh, what can it mean

Wed Oct 04, 2006 18:26 (UTC -5)

Hey, guys. I’m alive. For reals. I’ve just been busy, that’s all. I had a long weekend, but I was still busy. We had no school on Monday because it was Yom Kippur for our Jewish friends (and enemies, and everyone in between).

I spent Sunday and Monday studying and doing homework. Sounds like fun, right? Well, it wasn’t. I spent hours and hours poring over stuff. I had to study for two tests in my two hardest classes, AP Calculus (woo, applications of differentiation!) and Anatomy and Physiology (woo, the muscular system!). Plus, I had to do that ever-so-exciting paper for Anatomy and Physiology. It took me about three hours to write two pages of research. I don’t know what I would have done if I weren’t able to build upon a previous science project of mine. Maybe I’d still be writing. Normally I don’t study all that much, but I’ve been finding that I need to study more and more for stuff. Well, maybe not. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t know.

On Monday night, at the tail end of a marathon study session, I went out to a restaurant for my friend’s dad’s birthday. A fellow guest asked me if I had just woken up. Other than that, it was an enjoyable experience.

Anyway, I have lots more homework in store for this weekend and the weekend after that, but I’d like to forget about it because this week is homecoming week once again. Yesterday was Twin Day, where you and a friend dress the same. (Because we all know that twins always wear the same clothes, right?) Today was Character Day, where you dress up as… a character. It was much more interesting. I saw some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, some Napoleon Dynamites, Jesus, Strawberry Shortcake, Pippi Longstocking, Bob Marley, a hot dog, and other things I can’t even be bothered to remember. Tomorrow, to end it all, is Spirit Day, where each class is supposed to dress a certain color: the freshmen in black, the sophomores in white, the juniors in blue, and the seniors in gold. But who has anything that’s gold (or yellow, for that matter)? Not me, and it’s too late to buy a class t-shirt now, unless I want to buy it during lunch tomorrow.

Speaking of which: Tomorrow I’m fasting from sunrise to sunset to show solidarity with the people of Darfur, Sudan. (Yes, that means that I’ll only really be skipping lunch, but come on. I ate lunch today and I’m ferociously hungry. Besides, what more do you want from me?) Anyway, thanks to Luke for tipping me off to this whole thing. I hope it’ll raise awareness about the conflict in Darfur.

On Friday is the homecoming game, which I’m actually planning on going to. I’ve only been to a few of the school’s football games over the years (all losses, by the way), and I’ve never been to a homecoming game, so that should be cool. They’re even having a parade, so I have to go early and check that out. It’ll probably be comically short. And then, of course, there’s the homecoming dance on Saturday. It should be an interesting experience.

What’s the coolest thing you can do with a weather balloon? Attaching a camera to it and sending it into space is indeed very cool.

I’ve already mentioned and linked to some of the color photos that Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii took of Russia between 1909 and 1915, but here’s a gallery showing some of his photos of churches along with pictures of the churches (or what’s left of them) today. It’s really interesting when there’s nearly a century between the color photos.

Two years ago: “I’m in the process of coloring the entire envelope with a yellow highlighter.”
Three years ago: “Today I started teaching my friend’s sister to play the guitar.”
