I got one of those Domain Registry of America letters today as well and I almost fell out of my chair. My host gives me my domain for free, but when I first registered it I got it for around $7 from Yahoo! domains. $40 for 2 years is absolutely nuts.

I'm well aware that my real information out there, as I whois my own domain names from time to time.

As for the www or not, I think it depends on what site you choose. I tried three sites, all without entering the www. One gave me my address, and two didn't.

Out of curiousity, I checked www.(twos).com, and your information is hidden. But it's perfectly visible without the www.
