"I didn't know you were called Dennis"

Sat Jul 09, 2005 09:33 EST (UTC -5)

On Wednesday Tropical Storm Dennis was a distant threat, but today, Hurricane Dennis has arrived. Luckily we're not getting a direct hit -- it's more of passing by, so, as is the case with hits from tropical depressions, tropical storms, and near-misses by hurricanes, people aren't especially concerned. I have yet to see people raiding stores for supplies or putting up their hurricane panels.

The worst of the storm seemed to have hit while we slept -- or, in my case, trying to sleep. The wind was loud, the power blinked a few times. I think I heard thunder once or twice. Right now we're experiencing a relative lull in the activity as the hurricane brushes by. Sure, it's still windy with turbulent gusts, but the sky is a light gray and it's not raining.

Radar observations are showing that the hurricane is carrying a rather hefty tail behind it, and apparently that's going to smack into us later in the day. Whoopee. I hope everybody likes nonperishable foods and bottled water.

Nambers is an interesting concept that gives names to the numbers of IP addresses. Since the possible numbers range from 0 to 255, a list of 256 simple words is used. For example, 65 is "drum," 214 is "start," 160 is "orange," and 117 is "hope." You can actually use the Nambers in a URL in the form of http://namber.namber.namber.namber.mysteryrobot.com. For example, the University of Michigan home page can be reached via match.spoon.mom.shell.mysteryrobot.com.

My host apparently doesn't allow my site to be accessed for such pithy and base matters, but the Nambers site could tell me that theworldofstuff.com's Nambers are sound.cook.milk.city.

I tried sound.cook.milk.city.com on my browser and I got prices.com? What's up with that?

If you were to actually use Nambers, you would use mysteryrobot as the domain, and the nambers as the subdomain, as it were. Thus: http://sound.cook.milk.city.mysteryrobot.com.

city.com redirects to price.com.
