The Nerdies!

Thu May 26, 2005 18:19 EST (UTC -5)

Today I went to the Eighth Annual Pompano Beach High School Underclassman Awards. I call it the Nerdies. It's your run-of-the-mill end-of-the-year awards ceremony for the best students. Last year's ceremony was held in the cafeteria, but now that they've finished the auditorium, they can make it seem fancier and stuff.

First they offered scholarships and various honors that don't seem to mean much to me. Then they gave awards to the best student in just about every class. (I got awards for World History Honors and Algebra II Honors.) Finally, there were a few special awards, such as those for the highest grade point average and the best students overall. Several people (including one I know) took home a disgusting amount of awards (4). The person I'm thinking of in particular got two for Japanese, one for... I don't even remember now... and the last for the best overall student in the 10th grade.

Thus concluded the penultimate week of school. Normally when school winds down people find it convenient not to bring their backpacks. But this year, we aren't allowed to bring them during the last week, for fear of another prank like the one some people pulled yesterday (or was it the day before?). The prank, which, according to various sources, was the senior prank, was nothing but the old Crickets in the Hallway prank. If it was the senior prank after all, I pity them for being so unoriginal. I have to admit, though, it was entertaining.

When I visited my great-aunt in Ohio in July 1999, she gave me a (used) postcard with a picture of Ronald Reagan meeting Pope John Paul II in 1982:

Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II

She told me the postcard would be worth money because they were both old and going to die soon. Reagan died on June 5, 2004. John Paul died on April 2, 2005.

Any takers?
